MY CHARGER BY BILL FRANCE

THIS IS THE STORY ON HOW I GOT MY 1967 DODGE CHARGER. THE CAR WAS BOUGHT IN EARLY 1967 IN RUTLAND VERMONT AT KILLINGTON MOTORS 270 MAIN ST. IT WAS SOLD TO A MAN NAMED PERCY BLISS WHO WAS 75 YEARS OLD. KILLINGTON MOTORS WAS A DODGE AND OLDSMOBILE DEALER. MR BLISS DIED ABOUT 3 YEARS LATER. HIS SON WHO LIVED WHERE I NOW LIVE HAD HIS OWN PLANE. MR AND MRS BLISS WOULD FLY TO VERMONY, AND WHILE THERE WOULD DRIVE THE CHARGER. AFTER HIS STEPMOTHER DIED MR BLISS BROUGHT THE CAR TO BINGHAMTON. IT HAD ONLY 6000 MILES ON IT. THAT WAS IN THE LATE 70’S. HE WAS A GREAT GOLFER AND WOULD PUT HIS GOLFING GEAR IN THAT HUGE TRUNK TO GOLF. HE PUT ANOTHER 4000 MILES ON THE CHARGER.
HE BECAME ILL AND HAD TO BE PUT IN A NURSING HOME. THAT IS WHEN THE CAR WAS GIVEN TO ME WITH 10801 MILES ON IT. THAT WAS IN THE EARLY 90’S. I STARTED TO RESTORE THE CAR AND HAD SOME SERIOUS MEDICAL PROBLEMS AND THE RESTORATION PROJECT CAME TO A HALT. THE CAR THEN SAT FOR A FEW YEARS. MY SON KEVIN BOUGHT A HOUSE JUST DOWN THE STREET FROM ME AND IT HAS A BIG TWO STALL GARAGE AND SAID HE WOULD LOVE TO TRY AND RESTORE THE CAR FOR ME. WE DROVE THE CAR TO KEVINS HOUSE AND ONE AND A HALF YEARS LATER IS WHAT YOU SEE TODAY. NEEDLESS TO SAY THE CAR WILL BE HIS SOMEDAY. THERE IS ONE INTERESTIN FEATURE ON THIS CAR: THE DASH LIGHTS HAVE NO BULBS. IT IS A SYSTEM CALL ELECTROLUMINESCENT. IT IS A NIGHTMARE. ALL THE GAUGES HAVE A MATERIAL AROUND THEM THAT LOOKS LIKE GREY PUTTY. THERE IS A REAL SMALL COPPER WIRE THAT COMES THROUGH AN INSULATER IN THE CLUSTER AND IS IMBEDDED IN THIS MATERIAL. ALL THE NEEDLES ARE WRAPPED IN A RED MATERIAL AND ALSO THAT REAL FINE COPPER WIRE. UNDER THE CENTER OF THE DASH IS A TRANSFORMER THAT CONVERTS 12 VOLT D.C. CURRENT TO 240 VOLTS A.C. CURRENT. THAT IS THE SAME AMOUNT OF CURRENT THAT RUNS YOUR KITCHEN STOVE. BELIEVE ME WHEN YOU ARE WORKING ON THIS SYSTEM, YOU HAD BETTER HAVE IT GROUNDED REAL GOOD OR YOU WILL GET KNOCKED RIGHT OUT OF THE CAR. IT GETS YOUR ATTENTION REALLY QUICK. THE GOOD THING IS – THERE ARE HARDLEY ANY AMPS , SO IT DOESN’T KILL YOU. THE CURRENT GOING TO THE DASH LIGHTS MAKES THEM GLOW IN A PRETTY GREEN AND THE NEEDLES ARE A BRIGHT RED. I HOPE MY STORY WASEN’T BORING, BUT I WANTED TO TELL AS MUCH INFO AS I COULD ABOUT MY CAR. THANKS FOR READING THE STORY. ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE I WOULD GLADLY ANSWER. AT ANY MEETING.
Updated Information: Feb 2, 2012
The car came from the factory with a big block 383 cubic inch engine with a 2 barrel carburetor and single exhaust. Automatic transmission and shift on the steering column. It has 4 individual bucket seats. The rear seats and rear arm rest all fold forward where there is a door under the rear window that opens into the trunk that makes an area 4 feet wide by 7 1/2 feet long. I did make 2 major changes. It took me 2 years to find an original 4 barrel carburetor that was factory correct from the assembly line. I found one in California and an original 2 snorkle air cleaner that went with that carburetor. I also went ahead by converted the Charger to dual exhaust to unleash the 383 potential. I believe the charger has a rally dash with fuel ,oil ,temp ,gas , tachometer , and 150 mph speedometer. It also has hidden headlights which has their own motors on each light to open and close them. Under the dash there are 3 relays (1 power relay, 1 open relay and 1 close relay). On the dash panel is a switch that you can flip to lock the light doors in the open position. It has power steering and power brakes, fold down arm rest in between the front seats. They say there are 120 drifferences between the 66 and 67 chargers and there were a few engine options which include 318, 383, 440, and 426 hemi with dual 4 barrel carburetors. The 426 Hemi is a REAL MONSTER engine. I can’t think of anything more at this time.
